The Role of the Police
Domestic Violence is a crime and is treated as a serious matter by the police. The police service has Domestic Violence Officers who have specialist training and there is a Domestic Violence Unit in every district. The police should be sympathetic and should offer support, information about police procedure and legal proceedings. The police work in partnership with many statutory and voluntary agencies who have qualified staff to provide emotional and practical support.
The PSNI says that it has a policy of positive action when attending reported domestic incidents and will arrest the perpetrator where there is sufficient evidence.
If you find yourself under serious threat or involved in an incident of domestic violence you can dial 999 for assistance.
